Endemic strains in this region
- Puumala virus — Nordic boreal belt (Finland, Sweden, Norway); bank vole reservoir (Myodes glareolus)
- Dobrava-Belgrade virus — Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia); Apodemus flavicollis reservoir, severe HFRS
- Tula virus — sporadic across Central Europe (lower clinical impact)
- Seoul virus — port-city sporadic detections in pet/lab rats
Reporting & case patterns
Europe records HFRS rather than HPS. Puumala in the Nordics is mild (case fatality <1%) but high-incidence — Finland reports ~1,500–3,000 cases per year. Dobrava in the Balkans is severe (case fatality 5–10%) but lower incidence. ECDC publishes annual surveillance summaries.
Regional prevention notes
Standard rodent-proofing of cabins and woodsheds. Risk peaks in autumn when bank voles enter dwellings. EU mountain hut and ski cabin operators receive specific guidance from national health authorities.
