Endemic strains in this region
- Sangassou virus — West Africa (Guinea, neighbours); rodent reservoir Hylomyscus simus
- Limited surveillance across most of the continent
Reporting & case patterns
Reports are sporadic. South Africa, Senegal and a few other countries have detected hantavirus serology in rodents and occasional human cases, but routine surveillance is limited. True burden is likely under-reported — absence of signal does not mean absence of risk.
Regional prevention notes
WHO AFRO recommends that suspected viral haemorrhagic fever cases include hantavirus in the differential, especially in patients with rodent exposure histories.
