Asia

Hantaan and Seoul viruses in China and the Korean peninsula. Highest HFRS burden globally — about 150,000 hospitalised cases per year, the vast majority in China.

Last updated: 2026-05-08

Endemic strains in this region

  • Hantaan virus — China and Korean peninsula; Apodemus agrarius reservoir, severe HFRS
  • Seoul virus — urban rats globally, originally from Asia
  • Amur virus — far-eastern Russia (clinically similar to Hantaan)

Reporting & case patterns

Asia carries the highest global hantavirus burden by far. China alone reports ~10,000–50,000 HFRS cases annually depending on year and surveillance intensity. Korea and far-eastern Russia add several thousand more. Inactivated vaccines against local strains are used in occupational and high-risk populations in China and South Korea.

Regional prevention notes

Agricultural worker programs in endemic Chinese provinces include vaccination drives. Standard rodent control plus early supportive care (reduces fatality from 10–15% down to 1–2% in well-managed cases) is the public health priority.
